Blessed Jane of Aza, mother of our Holy Father St. Dominic and of Bl. Mannes
Blessed Jane was born into the Aza family. She was the spiritual power in a most religious family being mother to St. Dominic, Bl. Mannes and Venerable Anthony, a priest, and wife to Venerable Felix de Guzman. She was "virtuous, chaste, prudent, and full of compassion for the poor and the afflicted." She died at Caleruega, Spain, in the early thirteenth century. She was beatified by Leo XII in 1828.

Blessed Augustine Kazotic, friar and bishop
Blessed Augustine was born at Trogir in Dalmatia (Yugoslavia) about 1260. Entering the Order at an early age he studied at the University of Paris and became an outstanding preacher. In 1303 Blessed Benedict XI, a Dominican, appointed him Bishop of Zagreb where he restored the faith after the Tartar invasion. In 1317 he was transferred to Lucera, where he restored peace after the Moslem departure. He died there on August 3, 1323

OUR HOLY FATHER ST. DOMINIC. solemnity
St. Dominic de Guzman was born at Caleruega, Spain, in 1172. He studied at Palencia, was ordained a priest and became a Canon Regular in the Cathedral Chapter of Osma. He dedicated his life to the salvation of souls through apostolic preaching. He founded a monastery of cloistered nuns in Prouille, southern France, and the Order of Preachers which was approved by Pope Honorius in 1216. He was a man of intense prayer, asceticism and study and believed in simplicity and poverty of life. He died at Bologna on August 6, 1221.

Blessed John of Salerno, friar and priest
Blessed John was born in Salerno, Italy, about 1190 and was ordained a priest. While pursuing studies at the University of Bologna he was attracted to the Order by the preaching of Blessed Reginald. Saint Dominic received him as a novice and later sent him to Florence to establish the priory of Santa Maria Novella. He died there in 1242.

Blessed Aimo Taparelli, friar and priest
Blessed Aimo Taparelli was born in Piedmont, Italy, in 1395, and as a young man he married but became a widower. He joined the Order and both studied and later taught at Turin. In 1466 he was appointed an Inquisitor for Liguria and Lombardy. After thirty years in this post he died in his home town on 15 August 1495.

Saint HYACINTH OF POLAND, friar and priest
Saint Hyacinth (Jacek) was born near Wroclaw (Breslau) in Upper Silesia, Poland, around 1185. He became a priest and a canon of the cathedral of Krakow. During a visit to Rome he met St. Dominic and decided to join the Order in 1220. He was sent to establish the Order in Poland. He died in Krakow on August 15, 1257. He was canonised in 1594. His brother is Bl. Ceslaus. He is patron of Poland.

Blessed Mannes, friar, priest and brother of St. Dominic
Blessed Mannes, an older brother of Saint Dominic, was born at Caleruega, Spain, about 1170. He joined the Order founded by St. Dominic and founded the Covent of St. Jacques in Paris in 1217. He was “a contemplative and holy man, meek and humble, joyful and kin d and a zealous preacher”. He died near Caleruega in 1235 and was beatified in 1833 by PopeGregory XVI

Bl. George Thomas Rehm & 63 Companions, friar, priest and martyr
George Rehm was born in 1752 in the Upper Rhine Valley, Germany and joined the Province of France in Paris in 1772, taking the name Thomas. He was ordained a priest and preached fearlessly, refusing g to take the oath imposed on the clergy after the French Revolution. He was arrested in 1793 and sentenced to be deported to Devils Island in French Guyana but the ship did not leave harbour and he remained on board in appalling conditions which claimed his life on 11 August 1794. Pope John Paul II beatified him and sixty-three other priests and religious on 1 October 1995.

Bl. Jordan of Pisa, Friar and Priest
Blessed Jordan was born near Pisa about 1260 and entered the Order there. He taught in several houses of the Order and was known for his eloquent preaching throughout the region of Pisa and Florence. He died at Piacenza on August 19, 1311.

ST. ROSE OF LIMA, lay dominican and virgin
Isabella Flores, better known as Rose, was born in Lima, Peru, in 1586. She dedicated herself to God at a very early age and took a vow of virginity. She joined the lay fraternity of St. Dominic when she was twenty years of age and lived in a hermitage in her family's garden. She undertook severe penances for the salvation of sinners and for the missionary efforts of the Church in the Indies. She had a special devotion to the poor and sick. She died at Lima on 24August 1617. In 1671 she became the first canonized saint of the New World and was named Patroness of America.

Blessed James of Bevagna, friar and priest
Blessed James was born at Bevagna, Italy, in 1220 and entered the Order in Spoleto. He was a renowned preacher and was very successful in combating heresy. He died at Bevagna on August 22, 1301.

St Augustine bishop and doctor of the Church
Saint Augustine was born at Tagaste, Algeria, around 354. When Innocent III invited Saint Dominic to choose a rule for his followers from already existing and approved rules, he chose the Rule of Saint Augustine. This is the special relationship the Order has with the Bishop of Hippo
